TradeView Live with Eric Johnson: Fact-Checking China Exports, India Booking Trends, and Europe’s Outlook

October 2, 2025

The pace of disruption in containerized trade has reached levels not seen in decades. In the latest TradeView Live session, Eric Johnson, Senior Technology Editor at the Journal of Commerce, joined Vizion’s Kyle Henderson and Ben Tracy to discuss the shifts across major trade lanes. From China’s sharp booking declines to India’s growth story and Europe’s fragile outlook, the conversation highlighted why real-time booking data is essential for navigating tariff pressures and supply chain uncertainty.

China → U.S.

China’s bookings into the U.S. have been among the hardest hit in 2025. Weekly data shows double-digit declines across much of Q3, though the pace of decline eased slightly in mid-September. The categories with the most volume include furniture (HS 94), toys (HS 95), and metals (HS 72/73/76). Noted in the episode, tariffs are forcing many importers to diversify sourcing, with Mexico, Vietnam, and India gaining attention.

The U.S. is not alone. The impact of tariffs and shifting sourcing strategies is visible across other destinations as well:

  • Mexico has seen the steepest drop at -21.6%, highlighting the limits of diversion strategies.
  • Germany (-7.7%) and the Netherlands (-8.6%) show how Europe’s exposure to Chinese exports is also softening.
  • Notably, Australia (+6.6%), Poland (+13.8%), and Indonesia (+13.6%) are bucking the trend, reflecting China’s search for growth markets outside traditional lanes.

India → U.S.

India continues to emerge as a key alternative for U.S. sourcing. Weekly booking data in 2025 shows volumes trending down from Week 32 onward, before turning upward more recently. Key product categories driving the lane include textiles and apparel (HS 61/62), machinery (HS 84/85), and furniture (HS 94). While shipments are regaining momentum, swings tied to tariff announcements and port congestion continue to make India’s growth story uneven.

➡️ Episode Highlight: During the conversation, Eric Johnson noted that while India is gaining momentum, “it doesn’t come without friction.” Infrastructure limits and port congestion continue to create chokepoints, meaning India’s rise is promising but not yet a smooth substitute for China.

Europe → U.S.

Europe’s exports to the U.S. are performing more strongly than in 2024, but the lane’s stability depends heavily on its product mix. Beverages and machinery have provided a steady foundation, helping offset weaker flows in consumer-facing categories like vehicles and plastics.

➡️ Episode Highlight: Eric Johnson described Europe’s position as a “double bind” — companies are absorbing inflationary costs at home while also facing tariffs abroad. This combination has left many European shippers cautious, reluctant to commit to long-term volume strategies even in categories where demand is stable.
