The Vizion Port Index Shows a February Slowdown

The Vizion Port Index is a measurement of how major U.S. ports are performing at any given time. The Index gives cargo owners, freight forwarders and others a look at which ports are processing containers efficiently and which are struggling to manage volume.

The Index tracks the average number of days it takes for vessels to move from arrival to berth, how long vessels remain at mooring, and how long it takes for containers to gate out after they have been discharged (which is commonly referred to as dwell time).

The latest edition of the Vizion Port Index looks at how major ports performed during February. See the data below, and get in touch with us to talk about gaining access to port performance metrics and related data for your business.

The February 2023 Vizion Port Index

Vizion’s data for February 2023 shows the following averages at all 26 major ports around the country:

  • Vessel arrival to berth: 0.51 days
  • Vessel at mooring: 1.29 days
  • Container dwell time: 4.85 days
  • Total: 6.65 days
  • Percent change: +7.36

Charleston (5.42), New York (5.58), Norfolk (5.13) and Tacoma (5.70) were among the best-performing ports in February, though only Tacoma improved its performance month-over-month. West Coast ports like Los Angeles (9.70), Oakland (9.45) and Seattle (9.06) took the most time to fully process containers from vessel arrival to gate out.
