OOCL Container Tracking and Performance Insights Across Global Trade Lanes

July 28, 2025

When you ship with OOCL, performance and visibility matter. Tracking your container in real time, along with knowing what to expect from OOCL’s performance across lanes, can make or break your supply chain planning.

OOCL Container Tracking and Performance Data: Why It Matters for Supply Chain Planning

In 2024, Vizion tracked over 13.3 million container journeys with event-level detail across all major global trade lanes, using data from more than 230 sources. By analyzing the accuracy of Estimated Time of Arrivals (ETAs) provided by ocean carriers, we’re able to better understand reliability and performance trends. ETAs differ from carrier schedules in that they are the carrier's first operational information shared after a container departs origin.

ETAs are a cornerstone of effective planning and supply chain decision-making. Knowing where your container is at any given time is only part of the equation. Just as critical is understanding how the carrier typically performs, how often shipments arrive late, how far off ETAs tend to be, and which lanes see the most variability. Real-time tracking gives you immediate visibility, while performance data helps you plan ahead, manage exceptions, and choose carriers with confidence. Together, they empower smarter logistics decisions.

Using this data, we evaluated how OOCL performed across multiple global routes and how it stacks up against other major ocean carriers. Here's what we found.

Asia to North America (Transpacific)

  1. On-time arrivals: 24.6%
  2. Early arrivals: 26.3%
  3. Median transit time: 26.1 days
  4. Typical delay when late: 3.6 days
  5. Grade: A-

North America to Asia (Transpacific)

  1. On-time arrivals: 13.5%
  2. Early arrivals: 21.8%
  3. Median transit time: 29.2
  4. Typical delay when late: 7.9 days
  5. Grade: B+

Europe to Asia

  1. On-time arrivals: 3.7%
  2. Early arrivals: 15.1%
  3. Median transit time: 42.2 days
  4. Typical delay when late: 8.3 days
  5. Grade: F

North America to Europe (Transatlantic)

  1. On-time arrivals: 21.8%
  2. Early arrivals: 21.8%
  3. Median transit time: 26 days
  4. Typical delay when late: 4.5 days
  5. Grade: A

Europe to North America (Transatlantic)

  1. On-time arrivals: 14.3%
  2. Early arrivals: 18.5%
  3. Median transit time: 19.7 days
  4. Typical delay when late: 4.9 days
  5. Grade: C

Where OOCL Performs Best

OOCL delivers its strongest results on Transpacific Eastbound and Transatlantic Westbound routes, offering a high share of early arrivals and predictable transit times. While its on-time performance remains below 25% across all lanes, shippers with flexibility in delivery windows may find value in its early delivery trends and stable sailing durations.

However, for time-critical shipments especially on lanes like Europe to Asia other carriers such as Cosco or ZIM may provide better schedule reliability. To see additional trade lane performance reports, see here.

Why Use Vizion to Track OOCL Containers?

OOCL’s tracking portal gives visibility into a single shipment at a time. Vizion pulls real-time tracking data from OOCL and other carriers into one interface called BoxTrack. Whether you're shipping across lanes or managing dozens of shipments, Vizion simplifies container tracking with:

  1. Unified milestone timeline
  2. A single interface for multi-carrier visibility
  3. Real-time status updates and ETAs
  4. Bulk CSV upload and search tools
  5. Web dashboard and full API integration

FAQs About OOCL Container Tracking

How do I track an OOCL container?
Use Vizion’s BoxTrack container tracking tool to track any container. You’ll see real-time status, ETA updates, and milestone history with no login required.

Was OOCL a reliable line in 2024?
OOCL showed mixed reliability. On-time arrival rates remained below 25% across all major lanes, but its strong early arrival performance, especially on Transpacific Eastbound and Transatlantic Westbound, can benefit shippers with flexible delivery windows. However, lanes like Asia to Europe performed poorly, making it less suitable for time-sensitive shipments.

What’s a good buffer to plan for when using OOCL?
Based on Vizion’s tracking data, we recommend building in a 5 to 8-day buffer, depending on the lane.

What is OOCL’s SCAC code?
OOCL's SCAC code is OOLU. This code is used in electronic shipping documentation to identify OOCL.

What’s the best tool for tracking OOCL cargo?
You can track shipments through spreadsheets, OOCL’s carrier portal, or freight forwarder dashboards. However, platforms like Vizion provide real-time container tracking across all carriers in one place, reducing manual lookups and siloed systems.

Ready for Smarter OOCL Tracking?

Don't settle for static spreadsheets or single-carrier portals. Vizion gives you the data and visibility to stay ahead of disruptions and streamline shipment planning via API or user-interface.
