About Sealand

Sealand, formerly known as Maersk SeaLand, has played a crucial role in the intra-regional container shipping industry. Headquartered in Miramar, Florida, Sealand operated as an American shipping company with a strong presence across the Americas. With representation in 29 countries, Sealand provided comprehensive ocean and intermodal services, utilizing container ships, trucks, and rail to connect customers throughout North and South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Sealand's history traces back to January 1969 when it was owned by RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, CSX, and other entities. Throughout its early years, Sealand established itself as a reputable shipping company, serving the diverse needs of its customers in the Americas region.

In March 1999, as part of a restructuring effort, CSX divided Sealand into three separate entities: an international shipping company, a domestic shipping company, and a terminal operator. This restructuring aimed to optimize operations and enhance focus on specific market segments. In December 1999, Maersk acquired the international container shipping business of Sealand, recognizing its potential and the valuable market presence it had established.

Following the acquisition, Maersk Line adopted the commercial name Maersk SeaLand globally in 2000. This strategic decision aimed to leverage Sealand's strong brand recognition and customer trust. By integrating Sealand's operations and network into Maersk Line's extensive portfolio, Maersk SeaLand became a prominent player in the intra-regional shipping landscape.

In 2003, the domestic shipping line of Sealand was acquired by the Carlisle Group, subsequently changing its name to Horizon Lines. This move allowed the domestic operations to receive focused attention and resources under new ownership.

In 2006, as part of a rebranding effort following the acquisition of P&O Nedlloyd, Maersk SeaLand transitioned into Maersk Line, aligning its name with the global brand identity of the Maersk Group.

However, in January 2014, Maersk recognized the enduring brand recognition and value associated with Sealand throughout the intra-Americas region. As a result, the SeaLand brand was revived as a specialized intra-regional carrier, utilizing the existing Maersk Line network for intra-Americas trade. This strategic move aimed to leverage the strength of the Sealand brand and provide dedicated services to customers in the region. Starting in January 2015, Sealand resumed operations, focusing on meeting the unique demands of intra-regional shipping within the Americas.

While Sealand thrived under its revived brand, Maersk made the decision in January 2023 to retire the Sealand brand.
