About Safmarine

Safmarine, originally known as South African Marine Corporation, has played a significant role in the shipping industry since its establishment in 1946. Founded by South African industrialists and American ship owners, Safmarine embarked on its journey with three American wartime Victory ships. Over the years, Safmarine expanded its operations to include freight transport services, passenger vessels, and specialized cargo ships.

In 1996, Safmarine completed the acquisition of the Belgian container line CMBT, establishing its container line headquarters and registration in Antwerp, Belgium. This strategic move strengthened Safmarine's capabilities and allowed it to offer comprehensive container shipping solutions to its customers worldwide.

Recognizing Safmarine's strong brand reputation and specialized expertise, the Danish shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk Group acquired Safmarine in 1999. Maersk Line, a division of A.P. Moller-Maersk, chose to retain the Safmarine brand, appreciating its distinct market presence and unique value proposition. Safmarine continued to operate under its well-established name, leveraging its legacy and expertise in serving customers with excellence.

In 2002, Safmarine further expanded its operations by acquiring Torm Lines, a significant step towards enhancing its service offerings and strengthening its position in the industry. The integration of Torm Lines enabled Safmarine to broaden its reach and provide even more comprehensive solutions to its customers.

In 2011, it was decided that Safmarine would integrate its internal support and management functions into those of its sister company, Maersk Line. This strategic decision aimed to leverage synergies and optimize resources within the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, while still retaining the Safmarine brand.

In 2020, Safmarine completed its journey as an independent entity and became fully integrated into Maersk Line. This integration marked a new chapter in the company's history, as Safmarine's expertise and specialized services became an integral part of Maersk Line's comprehensive offerings. By combining their strengths, Maersk Line and Safmarine continue to provide customers with enhanced shipping solutions, leveraging a vast network, state-of-the-art vessels, and cutting-edge technology.
