Vizion Port Index for May 2023: San Pedro Ports Grow More Efficient Ahead of Labor Issues

The Vizion Port Index provides data on how efficiently major ports around the world were operating in the previous month. Data for May 2023 shows that Southern California ports in the San Pedro Bay grew significantly more efficient month-over-month, while the nation as a whole experienced a slight slowdown in efficiency.

Vizion’s Port Index provides specific numbers as measured in days related to:

  • How long it takes for vessels to move from arrival to berth.
  • How long vessels remain at mooring.
  • How long it takes for containers to gate out after discharge.

The total of these three metrics provides an overall port performance figure that can be used by shippers, logistics services providers (LSPs) and others to evaluate the efficiency of any given port.

The May 2023 Vizion Port Index

Vizion’s data for May 2023 shows these averages across the 25 largest ports in the United States:

  • Vessel arrival to berth: 0.48 days
  • Vessel at mooring: 1.31 days
  • Container dwell time: 3.89 days
  • Total: 5.67 days
  • Percent change: +15.84

On average, U.S. ports took 5.67 days to transition containers from their arrival on a vessel to gated out of a terminal. May’s best-performing ports included Charleston (4.2 days), Mobile (4.3 days), New York (4.4 days), Norfolk (4.4 days), Miami (4.6 days) and Seattle (4.7 days). Several major ports took longer than the average time to completely process containers, including Oakland (8.8 days), Tacoma (8 days) and Philadelphia (7.8 days). Oakland and Tacoma may have been affected by labor issues that emerged at the tail end of May.

While Long Beach and Los Angeles took longer than the U.S. average to process containers, they did show significant month-over-month improvement. Long Beach improved by -33.28%, and Los Angeles improved by -23.20%. Philadelphia (+45.38%), Oakland (+31.36%), Norfolk (+25.45%) and Savannah (+24.71%) showed the largest month-over-month declines in efficiency.
