The Vizion Port Index is a monthly measurement of how efficiently major ports in the United States are performing. The Port Index’s data for April shows month-to-month volatility at some of the most important gateways in the country, with some ports significantly improving upon their March numbers — while others grew significantly less efficient.
Vizion’s Port Index provides details on the how long it takes (in days) for:
- Vessels to transition from arrival to berth.
- Vessels to remain at mooring.
- Containers to transition from discharge to gate out.
The total of these three metrics indicates the overall efficiency of any given port. For comparison, the Vizion Port Index includes month-to-month changes for each port as well as the U.S. average for the month in question.

- Vessel arrival to berth: 1.23 days
- Vessel at mooring: 0.35 days
- Container dwell time: 3.13 days
- Total: 4.77 days
- Percent change: +7.58
Averages indicate that U.S. ports collectively took 4.77 days to move containers from arrival on vessels to gated out. The best performing ports in April included Norfolk (3.28 days), Mobile (3.32), Charleston (3.48) and Savannah (3.99). The list of ports taking longer-than-average times to turnover containers was again dominated by West Coast gateways, including Los Angeles (9.24 days), Long Beach (8.53), Tacoma (6.54), Oakland (6.04) and Seattle (5.73). Inefficiency on the West Coast has become an ongoing theme that regularly appears in headlines.
